BK's Speakeasy.
The exciting era of the roaring '20s was re-ignited in Galway city on Saturday
March 15 with the opening of Galway Swing's first Speakeasy event in BKs Wine Bar. While Prohibition
in the US is long gone, the legacy of the speakeasy remains, as a place for good food, great
entertainment and swingin' tunes. The night of music, food and dance brought back the gangster
age, when guys and dolls slipped into the speakeasy for fun and entertainment. BKs Wine Bar was
transformed into the 1920s establishment as diners enjoyed a three course meal to a backdrop of
the best in jazz and swing music.
The event, which was organised by local dance club Galway Swing, was sold out in
advance. As the night progressed, tables were pushed to one side in a bid to make room for those who
wanted to showcase their Charleston and Lindy-hop moves.
"It was a fantastic evening," said Galway Swing's Fearghal Mac Gowan.
"BKs Wine Bar provided the perfect setting to bring a typical 1920s Speakeasy to
Galway." The next Galway Swing Speakeasy will take place in June.
